I would watch some but am still holding on to not having a tv (or cable or sattelite) - for the summer games I tried watching a little on the free version of the peacock app but didn't seem like much was available. Or not the events I liked, anyway. Anyone have success watching on peacock? If it'll work well I would maybe get the paid version for a while.

And agreed that their coverage their is not great. I have no idea about behind the paywall. We actually have an antenna we hook into our TV to get NBC, because we don't have cable or satellite either. If you know someone who has it and wouldn't mind you borrowing their login, you could probably catch things on the nbc site. They will let you watch a bit for free, but then they hit you with a paywall. Greedy bastards.

It’s the only thing we are good at and the GB team tends to be made up of Scottish folk so I always like watching the curling.

I'm going to do like I did for the summer Olympics and try to watch some of every event. One of the perks of WFH and Hulu having quite a few channels with coverage. I think I only missed 4 or 5 sports for the summer games. Ice skating and bobsledding are the only two I usually watch. The winter games aren't as exciting to me.

I figured any prize was from either us Olympics or just getting sponsorship offers.

According to Google, it's the US Olympic committee who pays out for medals. Other countries pay their athletes to compete. I thought it was just part and parcel with the medal and all medaling athletes got them.

Ours get funding from the national lottery - so they don’t have to work full time and can focus on their sport.
I must say, since that happened, we have got a lot better and win more medals.
Before the lottery (pre 1990s) they got zero help.

I'm debating paying for peacock - 5$ for the month is totally reasonable. And the ice dancing and other figure skating shown in the free highlights clips were so freaking amazing and dd loved it. And I kinda started getting hooked on curling too ...
But then on the bbc program that was on yesterday morning they were talking with Uighur refugees who were really imploring people to not watch the games, so I feel especially bad watching in a trackable way that will for sure be counted and contribute to a number that may end up being high enough to be a disheartening punch in the gut to refugees and human rights activists. But I don't have a tv and antenna. And dd is just the right age for starting to get caught up in the wondrousness of the olympics, and honestly, after not having watched them much for the last 30 years (but having adored them as a kid), I miss them.
Would making a donation to a group working on human rights in china/ supporting Uighur refugees ethically balance out watching? Augh!

springbeduk, I'm conflicted too. The US didn't send a delegation because of it. I think if you want to donate to balance out your watching, that is a real actionable way to contribute.

Surprise surprise, ROC female figure skater tests positive for a restricted drug. Is this the one who is really impressive?

Surprise surprise, ROC female figure skater tests positive for a restricted drug. Is this the one who is really impressive? Yeah. The one with all the quads. If she's found to be guilty of doping, the team will lose their medal and she won't be able to compete in the individual.

The ROC should never have been able to compete IMO.

The ROC should never have been able to compete IMO. It's not really a punishment to let them compete under a different flag. I do feel for the athletes, though.

US and Canada are head to head tonight for gold in women's hockey. I'm going to try and watch for a while. Canada is the only team the US has lost to so far this games.

Has anyone been following the women's skating? The end of the event is so painful to watch. The poor gold medalist being left all alone while her teammates get emotional.

So painful. Was Trusova upset about placing second or the Valieva situ? She was raging. All of the adults around Valieva failed her so badly. Irreparable damage indeed. It’s long passed the time to really punish Russia for their behavior.

Wow to the whole thing. I want to hug them all.
