There's just a few of us with kids still under 5, but there are a few. If both Pfizer and Moderna get the remaining approvals, as seems likely (FINALLY!!!), how are you deciding which to get for your kid?
Have you seen any great explanations you could link to? I haven't seen one from YLE - maybe she'll have one later today?
From what I understand so far, these are common preferences out there among those who are eager for young children to get covid vax:
- Pfizer because it seems that after the 3 dose course there's better protection than from the current 2 doses of Moderna (though sample size was pretty small)
-Moderna because it will give some protection sooner - before school starts - and hopefully there will be a 3rd dose added before too long
-Pfizer because it's a lower dose and Moderna had (?) a bit higher rate of kids getting fever the day after the shot
-whatever they happen to have at whatever place you're most comfortable taking the kid for Vax
-other reasoning?

I’m waiting I think I haven’t seen great data about the Moderna. One study found only 33% coverage. However if they allowed 2 doses moderna 1 pfizer I might do it just to do something. Dd2 wears a mask she always has so I am not as worried about her and she won’t be going to school until Fall 2023. When she does go it will be an outdoor nursery school.

luvboston do you know what Israel is doing for kid vaccines (any age groups)? The first year, year and a half of covid it seemed like they were doing a great job with data reporting, studies, etc and were one of the few countries we could kindof get a preview from reports from there. But I haven't heard much in at least the last 6 months; not sure why

I’m going to the pediatrician this week and would like to hear her thoughts as she was all for Moderna several months ago.

I plan to use what is available at the pediatrician. If Pfizer, I am most comfortable with this one because that is what we have all be given.

Thank goodness for Walgreens! (And that my kid is 3, not younger) some of them are vaxxing 3 and 4 year olds (all or almost all have been doing 5+) starting Saturday; some locations have Moderna and some have Pfizer; ds is signed up to get Moderna on Saturday! If it weren't for that we'd probably be going 2.5 hours away to get it which would be a pain. His pedi office said maybe mid July (though maybe that has changed? He has an appt there Friday for sonething else and I'll see). I don't want to wait that long plus guessing they'll only have Pfizer and YLE's writeup helped confirm my leaning towards wanting Moderna (more protection sooner).
I still feel so bad for parents of kids younger than 3 who want it ASAP; this slow rollout is very frustrating for so many!
Dd got boosted at the end of May.

We got Pfizer it’s barely a shot she didn’t even really notice. However she started screaming at dinner and couldn’t be consoled so i gave her Tylenol and she slept from 7:45-5am which was bizarre.

I hate when I tell someone about getting the kids vaxxed and the response is like “I would never let my kids/ grandkids get that vaccine.”
I told them pretty much all pediatricians are recommending it. She told me my 2 yo was the only one in that room that would be getting it and that she heard most of their pediatricians were saying don’t get it. I said those parents are lying. There are not pediatricians going against the AAP recommendations. I said my sister likes to use one doctor as an example, ignoring that they are the 1% who say that.
