I can't think of a good July title so will just make a specific thread for this.
My kids got stung by yellowjackets on Friday first stings of their lives. They were out ahead of me so I didn't get sting, which dd thinks is most unfair. Anyway ... no sign of allergic reaction so at least that's good.
Yesterday I saw the nest - it's right under one of the deck stairs; dome shaped. Surprised me bc I thought yellowjackets only nested in the ground but turns out the nest other places too (including they can get into walls if the siding is damaged ... nightmare!!). So at least it's in a spot easy to get to. But definitely not good to just leave it there; we won't be able to use back yard and deck at all.
Am I crazy to plan to spray it (raid wasp stuff, following directions including to do at night)? I'm worried about the chemicals. And if it doesn't work. Though probably too late in the season for the queen to start a new nest somewhere worse (like in the wall), right? Many exterminators' websites have a bunch of cautions against DIY but they're just trying to drum up business, right?
So that leaves chemicals as the main worry. I don't like toxic stuff. I use ant baits and that's pretty much it. Mostly avoid even bleach.
I can't get an exterminator even if I wanted to spend the $$ and believe the cautions that trying DIY can lead to worse problems - it's a rental and landlord lives next door. And if I tell him then 98% sure he won't get exterminator and will just spray with no concern for chemicals (he thinks it's stupid my kids wear helmets to ride bikes) and will do a worse job than I will plus having to deal with him is stressful and I generally avoid at all costs.
Would you spray the area down with diluted detergent a couple times over the few days after spraying, to help get rid of and pesticide residue? Or anything else? Does the stuff in raid just break down in uv light anyway and or volatile enough to pretty much evaporate?
Any suggestions??
