rainbowsockmonkey please help me decide whether to turn ds forward facing! He's 3 years 5 months and on the bigger side for his age. Is rear facing still safer or not really at this point? I don't think I turned dd til she was 4, but mostly just due to inertia/laziness. I think? Or maybe you said safer to wait? I can't even remember! Technically, RF is safer, but at his age he wiukd be safe to FF. We would all be safer riding RF in vehicles, but that's not possible.

Oh and my car got stuck yesterday in the ice. Why did I buy front wheel drive. Do you have snow tires? I've always had front wheel drive (though the new car I just got is AWD) and been fine with it but tires make a huge difference!! No we literally have gotten about 5 inches total around here over weeks. We get tons of rain and ice with 8 degree temps.

How did you put so many miles on that car in such a short period of time? Do you have a long commute? I used to have a very long commute (60-70 miles each way) and it's still kinda long (about 30 each way) but the old car doesn't have so many miles really - 119K (had 26K when we bought it in mid 2018) - but it's a 2001!! That and transmission problems are why it has no value. Ahhh for some reason I read your post as that your van was a 2018 odyssey with 120k miles- lol. Makes more sense for a 2001. Mine is a 2019 with 15k miles and we’ve drove it on several long road trips. I just couldn’t make the math work in my head - haha.

Studded snow tires help (more than they help in actual snow) but even then - best to keep a container of sand in the car. There's so many things 4wd/awd doesn't help with. And also people get overconfident. When we have snow/ice the vast majority of the vehicles I see that have gone off the road are 4wd/awd! They probably are the overall majority of vehicles here, but still a disproportionate number of those that go off the road!

We are having another appraisal done this week. I know I don’t have to clean and have things looking great but I also don’t want to look like a slob.
We had an appraisal done in October for the home sale and are now in the middle of getting approval for a heloc. The credit union wouldn’t use the appraisal from October which I understand but also think is dumb. Based on the recent one, we had almost 60% equity so even if this one is lower it would have to be significant to even make a difference considering the amount we want for the heloc. I mean, whatever, do you thing credit union, but I would like to start moving on the kitchen reno and this heloc is taking foreevvvvvvvver.

The boys did great yesterday in their sports. Ds played baseball for the first time. I was nervous that I was starting him too late (he was really apprehensive that everyone else would be better than him), but he did such a good job and I was so proud. I accidentally brought him to the 8 year old group and he should have been in the 7’s (I thought u8 meant under 8, but it does not in this league). Ds2 played basketball in his first game and scored 0 and got blocked a lot, but he was so proud and had so much fun. It was a disaster and the kids kept forgetting to dribble (a lot of running down the court holding the ball). One of our kid friends kept doing karate to other kids during the game (not in a cute way, but hitting and kicking - he should have been kicked out of the game). I was grateful my kid just sucked but was really nice and had fun. He did give the other team a thumbs down when they scored so I talked to him about it. I saw him sneakily do it again and when he saw me catch him he smiled and gave them a thumbs up 🤣

We've been practicing so I'm hoping she won't be as nervous as she was when she first started soccer in the fall.

I could not sleep last night. I was so hot, then cold and my head so painful (not even like a headache, but sore around my skull).
I took a test first thing and it was negative. I tried to work but ended up calling in sick.
I did another test at lunch and it was positive - which I knew it would be eventually.

The coaches were so awesome and gave good feedback and made them all comfortable. There were many obviously talented kids, but my novice had fun and that’s what I was hoping. Hoping the same for G Ours had a clinic pre-season that was optional - not sure if you all have that too?

I am not sure how often you can catch this with all the different variants. We got a lot of notifications of exposure on Sunday, but we have no symptoms (and are vaccinated and had it a month ago) so I didn’t test. Kids were exposed, but had masks on, so not a true exposure. Actually dh is sick, but he tested and was negative. So we supposed it just a “normal” cold and some laryngitis.

I did a lateral flow on Friday when DD2 was positive and mines was negative. NHS test and protect sent a confirmation text that as close contacts we needed pcrs - we did that Saturday and it came back negative. We did lateral flows on Sunday and another one this morning - negative. I continued to feel like garbage so tested a few hours later - positive. I feel it’s only a matter of days now until the rest of us are all positive. I’m surprised at how unwell I am.

activebaby they do not have a preseaon clinic. They do have evaluations at the end of next month before they put them on teams. So hopefully they'll spread the talent around. She said she is only playing baseball until she learns how to pitch in softball so we'll see how long/if she sticks with it.

I'm so nervous to leave my house now. It's like 2020 all over again. DD2's teacher sent a message that she was coughing too much to teach and was going to be tested. I hope that means she didn't actually go to work today. If she was there and left early, I'm not going to be pleased. The kids were remote all of last week and today was the first day back in person.

Dd hasn't done any sports yet but she started chess club this morning. #teamnerd. Plus also me doing the least since chess club right at school at the time im supposed to drop her off for before care anyway. Sports is much harder logistics. activebaby I kinda love that your ds2 was giving the other team thumbs up when they scored! It's sweet. And being a good sport!

Dh has 8 hours of conference calls today and it is -10 degrees out, windchill is -25. Not even 2 hours in and I've run out of non screen time options to keep the kids quiet. I'm not even going to fight it because I got my booster yesterday and I'm too tired to care. 😆

I feel like when I need the kids to be quiet is always when they decide to start screaming at each other. I would definitely put on a movie or let them play a game on a tablet or something scotty. Survival mode and all that.

They were supposed to be masking….but I just got access to the class Shutterfly site and I see my kiddo in a mask on his chin once and then without a mask in every photo. We will be talking about this today because he told me he has been wearing his mask. To be honest, he’s 5 and my expectations were not high…but this looks like a 0% mask wearing effort.

I'm not as concerned about exposure at school since they wear masks but obviously they don't wear masks at swimming. DS will be upset if he doesn't go. I don't know what the right decision is.

His office is in the basement so the noise isn't as bad down there. As soon as someone is on a call though the kids just have to be as loud as possible. Usually it's 4-5 hours a day and we can get outside for some of it.

Sadly, there is no right decision. It’s just whatever you think is best given the shit circumstances at that time. Sucks. My take…. my #1 goal is to keep my kids in school. Nothing else functions much or well if they aren’t in school. So we keep an eye towards that with every decision. It means we skip some extra curriculars and play dates and group activities with friends sometimes. But for me and my sanity and performance at work, and being the parent with the “flexible” schedule so everything falls on me when they’re out of school, keeping them in school is worth all that hassle and whatnot.
