I'm not saying anyone needs to be on the same page and I completely understand that. I was just trying to share that I my experience madks/ no masks haven't made much of a difference in the elementary school spread so it may be just fine. I tried to clip this to the just the part that this reply is to but failed. So if i have time there may be another reply to same quoted msg but diff part. Honestly, I'm curious about that data (no change in case rates without masks) and wonder what we will end up finding out once there's time for scientists to look over what's available and gather it into studies and analyze. As much as i am all in on masks, it certainly could be possible that between there being times when masks come off (lunch and snack and some schools do mask breaks indoors too) and other factors like many people's masks being loose or gappy, people not actually covering nose and mouth, etc, that having masks in school doesn't help that much, especially with omicron. ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) I have anecdotes from people here now who are still super careful in home/community life and whose kids wear masks (and aren't going and hanging at friends houses, etc ) and yet one of the kids has just (in the last week+ since school resumed) tested positive so they think the kid must have caught it at school despite mask rule. For pre-omicron there is decent data that mask requirements at school help, though maybe really looking at UK data for not requiring masks in schools would be better because within the US communities that don't require masks in schools largely also have lower adherance to covid precautions in other aspects of life too. Anyway I'm glad the change isn't looking disastrous in your community, but still think it is so strange and really bad role-modeling for school leaders (including school boards) to be refusing to follow guidance from public health experts especially at a time when hospitals are overwhelmed and asking for help. That's different from stopping contact tracing in schools; that was actually supported by our CDC director in acknowledgement that they couldn't keep up and by the time people were told their kid was a close contact it was likely too late anyway. So it's more a "this is so bad we just gotta let some things slide and this one has the lowest bang for the (time) buck, so it goes)". Depressing because its evidence for how bad things are. Our delta wave was later than most of the rest of the country so we went into omicron from already highest-ever rates. It's bad. Hospitals continuing to set new records a few times a week. I definitely agree with you about the school leaders. Our superintendent is an ass who basically screamed and demanded schools be open without precautions. I kept DD home even at first. But as this has gone on for my own sanity and her mental well being I've tried to let some of it go. I can't control other people and worrying about their poor choices just makes me crazy. I'll continue to keep up with vaccines as we are eligible and continue to use common sense etc but it's all I can control was just trying to give you a bit of reassurance that things have remained the same here since mask wearing ended.

Last year our district required masks and they had about 100 cases reported for the school year. This year they started the year with no masks and there have been nearly 300 cases so far. Thankfully the colds we've had this year haven't been covid, but E still can't get vaccinated and he gets hit hard. Anyone with small kiddos or high risk are still stuck. I know omicron seems to be mild and headed in the right direction of becoming a normal cold, but it isn't over for some of us, unfortunately.

A d18 mom friend just told me that she and her newborn have “covid eye” which her doc said they are seeing after the virus. It made me feel less strange after my swollen eye lid last week. I had not heard anyone else complain of that. I also had swollen lymph nodes/neuralgia down the side of my face after having negative antigen testing. This virus is so freaky - so many different can symptoms happen.

Has anyone stayed at the Dolphin/swan at Dw? We stayed at beach club, right by Swan and Dolphin. The location is great. A walk to Epcot or the skyliner and access to restaurants at 3 Disney resorts. I would definitely consider it to have a great location and save some $.

I had airfare credits to use by the end of December 2021 so one day I committed to waiting on hold to get through to the dept that I need to in order to use them. 2 hours and 45 minutes later I had round trip airfare booked to Anaheim for late June.
I recently asked the kids if they could go anywhere, where would they go. They both said a beach house on Whidbey Island. They are going to flip when they find out they’re going to Disneyland. We are not telling them where we’re going. I can’t wait!

mrscheese , Sounds fun! I'm over here daydreaming about a trip. I'm trying to convince H that we should go to Pigeon Forge and rent a cabin. Is that Tennessee? I think anywhere but home sounds great! Lol Yes, and there's a theme park (Dollywood, think Dolly Parton). It's much closer than Disney. And a bit cheaper. I went as a kid and really enjoyed it. And yes, anywhere but home. We stayed a bit closer last year, but I want to be farther next time.

I think my minivan's transmission has died. 😭😭. I knew it was getting iffy, and have an appointment scheduled for tomorrow (that I set up 3 or 4 weeks ago) to get the transmission fluid flushed, and was really hoping that would keep it going at least 6 more months and maybe by then the market buying cars would be less crazy. But then Weds evening it was shifting really hard and being weird and intermittently smelled like either transmission fluid or something similarly bad smelling. Checked fluid early in the morning; wasn't low - actually was higher up the dipstick than it had been a couple months ago. ?? Anyway then we head out for school, etc and it totally won't shift into second - just loses power completely when it comes out of first. Finally I remembered that even on an automatic you can manually shift it into 1st or second and that worked, so we weren't just stuck stranded in the middle of our road, and actually as the car warmed up it got better and I was able to get the kids to school and daycare. Then calling and talking with mechanics, getting a rental car, etc. Blah. It's a 2001 so really hard to see it being worth putting 3200+ into fixing it (that's what the good transmission guy said it costs to rebuild trans - plus he doesn't have time til early Feb); even if new car prices are up they're probably not up by quite that much. Ugh. Also I had had to buy 2 new snow tires for it just a few weeks ago. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) Maybe it will turn out not quite as bad as I'm expecting - will find out tomorrow.

rainbowsockmonkey are there any tricks for getting the length adjuster on the LATCH strap to actually release (to make the strap longer and get some slack for unlatching? And or for getting the hooks unhooked? It's a graco something-or-other (not extend2fit but I forget which one) convertible mounted rear facing; has the basic metal latch clips. The car's anchors are pretty far down into the seat crack. I tried putting my weight into the seat to squish it down but that didn't give enough slack. Then I was out of time so just gave up and borrowed back the seat ds' daycare person uses for him. But tonight or tomorrow I've got to actually get that seat out.

Also rainbowsockmonkey (and anyone else who drives/has researched to buy a minivan) - and footloose because of working at mechanic shop - are there any makes of minivan that *don't* tend towards transmission problems? Or is it just a general issue of something so big and heavy mounted/being run on a car drivetrain and they're all similar?

I don't even know what I want to get. I hate driving such a gas guzzler on daily commute (70ish miles round trip), etc but then there are times we really need the space. And a wagon (like an outback) or a small SUV (CRV or Hyundai equivalent) doesn't get *so* much better mileage and has way less space (no 3rd row). Ugh.
Recs?

Does the strap adjuster look like what is circled in purple in the picture? I have a couple of graco seats, but none that have the J-hook style (circled in blue). I can probably get a video of how to loosen the strap later today if it is the same adjuster. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220114/4b86f0cd6fb6f493518f9746ded5b179.jpg) ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220114/ddb0525f2c69e12030a219295dfb9d7e.jpg)

We havent had transmission problems with it yet (knocking on all the wood). Toyotas and Hondas are known for being reliable vehicles over all, but i also know that new ones are $$$$ and used ones are hard to come by. My sister ans a friend both have subaru Forrester, and my sister has been able to fit a LOT of carseats in the back end of her. I know that doesnt have the 3rd row you were looking for though.

DH talked me into buying a 2022 Pilot for my birthday a few months ago. I was hesitant because my CRV was paid off, but I love it. I'm still getting used to all the new technology. It has a snow mode too. The gas mileage is good and it drives like a car. I'll ask my brother (he is a mechanic) if he has a good minivan rec.

springbeduk I know you want the space, but for gas prices, the minivans and SUVs will be fairly similar. I have no idea what I will do when my car goes because gas is insane now and I can not afford $150 to fill a tank for one week on my paycheck. As for transmission issues, I haven't seen vans that are coming in constantly for things like that. Also yes, transmission issues are pretty bad for cost so generally never worth it to fix unless you still have a ton of life left. Usually we see it in vehicles that are high in kms or also a lot older and it is just one of those things that it is it's time to go. Your vehicle owes you nothing if it is 2001 and you have done well with it. I had asked at work about the most reliable vehicles and they all said hands down a Honda. We very rarely have to see one and usually just tire switchover and oil changes. They make a great vehicle! Some of the worst vehicles are the more expensive ones and always owned by people who have zero clue that expensive cars also means very expensive car repairs. BMW's, Audi's, Volvo's all break down quite often.

Regarding Covid and masks and school issues. We have been online for the last 2 weeks after Christmas to cut down on cases after people visited relatives. Except now they are going back and even though our schools are all mask 100% for everyone, it is making me mad that they changed the rules and will not ask for testing unless someone is symptomatic and also if they have a positive case they won't notify any parents anymore. Peyton is still waiting to be able to get her second shot as we have to wait 2 months here. I am just getting my booster tonight actually.
I think it is wrong to not give any info as you don't know who all the kids go home to like grandparents or young siblings who can be affected. Yesterday at work I just learned that someone we do a lot of heavy equipment moving for is triple vaxed and just found out he has Covid and then had a "Covid stroke" they called it! He can barely move anything on his left side and he is not older at all and healthy so it is scary that you just never know who can be affected differently with this virus.

springbeduk would you consider a hybrid? I love my Prius but it is small. We have a bigger car if we need space, though, and it’s AWD which is great in snow and rain. But maybe some thing bigger but hybrid would work for you? Space and gas mileage. My next car will be all electric or electric-gas.
