Dh leaves today for a week in the office for the first time since covid hit. I don't know if I remember how to solo parent for days at a time. As a bonus we are supposed to get 12-18" of snow between tonight and tomorrow, so we'll also be snowed in. I could probably figure out how to plow but not while watching all 3 kids. Hopefully my dad can come clear the snow. This could get interesting. As a seasoned part time solo parent, I can say it’s getting easier with older kids. I realize you still have a toddler, but I just stick to the routine and the kids know what to do. I do not plow, but have had to snowblow and just left the kids in the house, but again no toddler in the mix. I'm solo parenting this week as well. But I only have one now older kid and is 60 degrees here today. I'm more just battling loneliness and boredom. Good luck scotty

scotty hope day 2 is going ok so far! It's February Vacation in the northeast (or maybe NH has/had it a different week? But most of new england and new york); if you want you could use that as a reason to let some homeschooling stuff slide this week! Did you get the snow? Is it fun snow you can build with or too cold to go out and play in it?

lulu how have you fared in the storms? Scotland wasn't mentioned in the news reports I heard about the most dramatic effects, where other parts of the UK were, but really we get so little news from Europe here that's not reliable. Anyway I hope you're ok! And that the lovely forest school your dd2 went to last year didn't suffer damage. I still want there to be hundreds of schools like that all over the world (at least the forest-y parts) - it just sounded like the best for a preschool!

Thankfully less than they projected but still a lot to get off the solar panels and deck and too cold to play in. I sometimes forget how much it takes to keep the fire going, chickens watered, and snow removed because DH does it all in the winter. Homeschool should pass some time at least.

H has Ds & Ds2 with him skiing. He is also with his parents, sister, bil, and their two kids. So it’s just me and Ds3 for the week. My house is so much cleaner.

Do you have to do anything extra for the chickens when it's super cold? One of my students who has chickens (and is very into having them) said one of the very cold nights he had to get up around 4 or 5 AM to feed them extra so they poop more to keep the coop warmer, and then even with that some of them got frostbite on their combs and so he had to treat that and start putting Vaseline on the combs to reduce chance of frostbite ... Seems like a lot!

Seems like a lot! We just have to water extra in the winter because it freezes up even with a heated waterer. We mostly keep breeds without large combs because of frostbite but we ended up with a rooster on accident that has a big one. He gets Vaseline if it is going to be below zero. He still has some frostbite though, poor guy. It's not much work keeping chickens, just a bit more in the winter and we don't get eggs when it's this cold.

We all have colds and DD1 is the worst. She threw up last night so is home today. We've been taking rapids often and they all have been negative. Took DD1 for a PCR this morning, so now we wait and see.
I'm so tired of all this. I need it to be warm and nice so we can enjoy the outdoors and for the cold and flu season to be done.

DH had a sore throat yesterday and DS complained of a stomach ache last night and is a bit sniffly today. Part of me wonders if we all have covid.

I am in CT would you believe so missing the storms. DH hasn’t mentioned anything so am presuming we are okay? We did have a terrible storm the day I left for the US but we fared okay. There has been a lot of tree damage over the past few weeks with the high winds and various storms, so I imagine the forest school suffered a bit. But to be fair, the woods there were very well managed and tree surgeons were there regularly so they will be fine I’m certain. Will post in the privates about why I am here.

There was a gas leak at the apartment building across from me tonight. Chapter in the solo parenting files, dropped DD at gymnastics came back and am blocked from my street. Park in a local pizza restaurant, walk home only to slide in the mud and get soaked in the rain.

Expecting up to a foot Friday. DH is supposed to be on the red eye Thursday into Friday, but the timing of the storm may mean he doesn’t make it home. School is planning to be closed, and it will probably be a remote learning day for DD. I’ve had a really lovely 3 quiet days this week though, and no obligations tomorrow so I can be mentally prepared for the Friday chaos.

I let the kids miss school this week to go skiing. They will miss 4 days total (unexcused absences for the year). They missed a couple days earlier this year - covid prevention related (exposures), but they wouldn’t excuse them because they didn’t actually have covid. I got a pretty threatening feeling email from the school today saying if I was guilty of unexcused absences of greater than 5 for the year I could be fined or have jail time. 🙄 The school system kicked us out of school so many times and went virtual (and an ATL Braves special day) and I let the kids be out for 4 days in the entire year and get that email. Oh well, they will have 2 more absences because they are in Colorado…..

We called the school and they said they are required to send that letter at a certain number of absences and just to ignore it. It was worded to really be stressful though. Not sure why they have to do that.

Not sure why they have to do that. H was pissed and wrote back to the principal - she said it was automatic and that she could change the past unexcused to excused since they were covid exposure absence. I am 10000% annoyed about that because I’ve called about this and written and had doctors notes but I honesty feel it’s because he is a man that they responded versus ignoring me.

Yeah, our school has been sending notices. It includes excused absences too. I'm all, what do you want from me? They have sent my kids home multiple times for silly symptoms after they were tested, that I'm just over it.

We have been letting the kittens we are boarding out of my sewing room during the day since Saturday. Only when we are home, and they get put away when the kids feed them at bedtime. Even though I just went through the process a year ago, I forgot how much of a PITA it is to train cats to not get on the counter and table. Simon has it mostly mastered, and when I see him thinking about it, I can break his thought process just by saying his name (him burning his paws on the cooktop on the island also helped the process). He now likes to sit on the bar stools on the opposite side of the island and watch me cook. Onion, the orange kitten, is CONSTANTLY jumping on the counter. I keep it clean and don't leave dishes out to make it less appealing, but he is still constantly up there. I tried putting foil down, and that did nothing. I started using a small nerf gun yesterday to shoot him, and it worked the first couple of times, but now he doesn't care. DH is going to bring a squirt gun in from his garage tomorrow and I'm going to start using that. If that doesn't work, I'm going to pick up a bigger more powerful nerf gun on Monday when I go shopping with my mom. Everyone else in the house has a nerf gun except me, so its fair. Here's my little "soup" chef watching me get the chicken broth ready to go on the stove this morning.

Do any of you have a (preferably free, but if it's really good and worth it then I guess not free ok too) podcast app for android phones you would recommend? There are just too many choices and I didn't like the one I had put on my old phone but no idea which other one would be better.

He listens to podcasts daily and has his own, so he probably knows what's good.
