Ds (4 y.o.) is sick - congestion & post nasal drip, fever, sometimes saying his neck hurts (but no other alarming symptoms that would suggest meningitis or other scary thing) and that his legs hurt behind his knees. Less appetite than usual but no other GI symptoms (yet, knock on wood ...). Intermittently tired/lower energy but just normal sick kid/resting more sort of change not alarmingly lethargic. No sore throat; says ears feel ok too.
There have been several cases of hand, foot, and mouth among kids at the daycare he goes to for before and after care, so I'm guessing most likely it's that, even though he doesn't have any rash or sores yet. (Thus is day 2 of fever; congestion started maybe 3 days before; was kinda tired & clingy and less appetite the day before fever started but he also hadn't been sleeping well this week (taking way long to fall asleep and then waking up extra early).
Home covid test yesterday mid day was negative, though it's extremely hard to test him (screams runs hides squirms) so I only was able to swab maybe 3 times around each nostril; nowhere near the 15seconds the directions say. Don't know of him having had any covid exposure, though of course it's around and he could have.
If dd ever had HFM, it was mild/not obvious. I know lots of you have kids who definitely had it. I also know you're not doctors, but ... from your mom-experience - would you be guessing he has HFM even though no spots or rash yet, since we know he's probably been exposed? Or guessing more likely something else (covid or rsv or one of the other early childhood viruses ...)?
Dd and I still feel fine, knock on wood ...
I did call his pediatrician yesterday; the person who called back must have been in training - she kept having to put me on hold and go ask someone, and other times she sounded like she was reading off a website. Anyway no useful info. (Not that they really can say that might about a little kid virus over the phone...)

springbeduk, sorry he's sick. DS has had HFM several times and the one time he had a fever, he only had it for only a day before the rash showed up. If his fever is high, it could be the flu. Otherwise if he tested negative for COVID, I would guess a random virus. If the fever goes on for a few days, you may want to bring him in for piece of mind.

springbeduk, hope he's better soon and doesn't get the rest of you sick. There's so much nastiness going around right now.

Two of my kids had those symptoms in September the pedi couldn’t diagnose went on for 3 weeks especially leg pain the fever was like 1.5 weeks. Good luck

Ugh! That's a long time, luvboston. I'm sorry you and your kids had to deal with that. Thank you for the tip, though of course I'm going to really hope it's not that! But helpful to know it's a possibility (mystery illness lasting so long, and that somehow only 2 of your 4 got). Did they test for Lyme? If it weren't for the nasal congestion, I'd be suspecting that for ds (though haven't found any ticks on him but they can be so sneaky, and there isn't always the rash). I suppose he could have lyme and coincidentally have a cold too ... ugh!

springbeduk I’m sorry ds is sick. I would think it’s something viral. The pain behind the knees is hard because it could be so many things (even growing pains?). We just went through sickness here it started with me. Then 2 of the kids (the ones who are always in my face) had mild versions. Ds2 has just been diagnosed with eczema and maybe psoriasis (his arms and legs are so pathetic). I finally got a derm referral and we have an appointment next week. My mom called a million for me until she could find an appointment - the earliest I could find was in January. So it will be a bit of a drive, but otherwise I couldn’t help him like he needs.

rainbowsockmonkey would you be able to recommend a backless booster for me? I want one that attaches with the latch system and that I can put 2 next to each other in the backseat along with dd2’s car seat. I want to have an extra booster so we can drive friends around. I also would consider switching DD2 to a high back booster that will switch to a backless in the future. She’s almost 6 and is around 48 lbs. I did look on carseatsforthelittles but I wasn’t seeing any that fit all of those requirements. I have a Toyota Highlander but only use the 2nd row usually.

So, you won't be able to fit 3 across in the 2nd row of the Toyota Highlander because of the plastic hinges for the seat ( pictures). There aren't many narrow boosters with Lower Anchors that will fit well 3 across. A good narrow booster (doesn't have the Lower anchors) is the Graco Right Guide. It is light weight and good for travel, so easy to store in the vehicle when not in use.

And also, I am just over here drowning my way through life. Even though I limit the number of activities my kids do I still feel like we’re always running from one thing to the next, I desperately need to hire a cleaning lady but can’t afford to and my family and job are just sucking the life out of me. Blah! I do come on here to check in on you ladies but always feel like I have nothing to say and everything to say all at once. I hope you’re all doing okay and doing a better job of giving yourself some peace than I am.

Right now we're only in Girl Scouts and dance, but with birthday parties and playdates on top of everything, I very rarely get to just sit.

I'm impressed that you all are managing having kids in any activities, etc! Just the bare minimums of life are keeping me totally tapped out. Dd has chess club before school one day (which barely changes out schedule so is manageable - she just goes there instead of before care). No sports or music, etc lessons for either kud. Also, great to hear from you scout251, @njgirk84, and meggypoo1!

footloose do you need any children's ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or other meds sent to you? The news has been talking about there being such a shortage of them in Canada. I just had to buy some because of ds being sick and it seemed like supply here is ok (I ordered for curbside so didn't see rather shelf, but the items I wanted to order weren't out of stock) and there was even buy one get one half off at Walgreens. So if you need any, I'd be happy to send!

Also barely hanging on over here. I’ve had at least one kid home sick for the last 2 weeks. I have them both home sick again today. Cot was supposed to go on her first field trip today and she is distraught to miss it.
Dh got promoted at work and I basically never see him anymore. He’s been working so much overtime.
My own job has suffered and I never get to be alone for more than 5 minutes and it’s slowly killing me.
So, hi, hello, and I see all of you. We are in the thick of it.

Same here. We got stuck at Disney which was easier then regular life. But now I’m weeks behind on everything. Kids are sick and DS2 is having ear and tonsil surgery today. So he will be home for 10 days, should be a joy.

Wow mrscheese; that is a lot. Hugs to you. Especially sorry that your H's promotion cane with such outrageous hours you aren't seeing him! Might that change in the foreseeable future? (Like, maybe there's a job open and they just haven't been able to fill it yet? Or boss(es) might see that there need to be done changes? Here's to everyone getting, then staying, healthy the next several weeks, at least!

I was trying to do research for the ornament exchange, by looking through the threads from previous years, and apparently photos from before 2020 don't show anymore. is it the same on tapatalk? (I just use the web browser version of proboards ... avoid tapatalk whenever possible) I hope all the people who have drifted away from this group over the last few are doing well! Grateful for all of you who have stuck around, and for those who have been quiet a while but recently popped in and said hi!

I guess at least it's good you didn't have to postpone the surgery due to his siblings being sick? The minute there was a sniffle we all wore masks and made him sleep far away and turned on all air purifiers then when dd1 started puking I sent him to my parents. It’s a miracle he didn’t get sick. His ears were filled with fluid and his tonsils and adenoids were giant. No wonder he’s been such a terror lately.

They just hired two people but only one seems like it will work out. They have hired another but he was let go in the first two weeks because he was not a good fit. It’s hard to find people right now. It should get better but my gosh…. It’s a slog for now.

I need to get toughened up for winter. It was right around 30 on the way home (walking out to my car, picking kids up from after school care) but it just felt bone chilling!! Really, though, right around 30 is pretty mild.
